Construction of the new hockey arena for the Detroit Red Wings and a 45-block entertainment district will soon begin.
Olympia Development of Michigan says the entire project is expected to create 8,300 construction and related jobs. Olympia is still securing zoning approvals from the city before it can begin construction, but it is permitted to begin some earthmoving and site-prep work.
At least 10 Detroit-based firms have been awarded $25 million of the first $30 million in contracts for the projects, which are expected to cost $650 million.
The arena is scheduled to open by Summer 2017.
