$5.6 Billion Light-rail Project Given (limited) Green Light

April 25, 2016

The Purple Line was granted “limited notice to proceed” shortly after Maryland's Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn signed the contract for a 36-year public-private partnership.

The 16.2-mile light-rail line will run 135-foot single-vehicle trains along a recreational trail and local streets between Bethesda and New Carrollton. The east-west line will connect Maryland’s Metrorail lines with Amtrak and MARC commuter rail stations with 21 stops.

Maryland plans to open the entire line at one time, rather than in stages. Completion is planned for 2022.
