A Hong Kong-based consortium and the Nicaraguan government broke ground for the proposed $50 billion canal that would link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The idea of a shipping canal through Nicaragua has been discussed for 100 years, but many people are skeptical of the project, partially because the Chinese billionaire who is financing it has never undertaken a project near the size and scope of the canal. Environmentalists have also criticized the project.
