Three construction workers were killed and another critically injured after an exterior lift system tore away from the side of an office building under construction in Raleigh, N.C.
Workers were in the process of dismantling a "mast climber" on the 11-story Charter Square Building, when the system collapsed and fell to the ground, reported the Wake County News & Observer.
Two of the victims worked for Janna Wall Inc., a company that specializes in "curtain" wall installation, said a spokesman for the N.C. Department of Labor. Choate Construction, the project contractor, has been cited for seven safety violations over the past 10 years, according to federal records.
The state Occupational Safety and Health Division is currently investigating the incident to determine whether the contractors followed weight-load limits of the system, which could take anywhere from three to six months, said Labor Department spokesman Neal O'Briant.
