2nd Phase of LV Convention Center $1.2 Billion Expansion Begins

Groundbreaking for 1.4 million square feet of space on old Riviera site set for today

January 08, 2018

Today marks the start of new construction on the site of the former Riviera Resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) will officially begin Phase Two of the convention center's renovation and expansion which is expected to generate nearly 14,000 construction jobs. The Las Vegas Convention Center District Plan requires 15 percent of the work to be done by local small business

The project now focuses on building 1.4 million square feet of new exhibition and meeting space where the Riv once stood. After Phase Two is completed in 2020, renovation of the existing 3.2 million square feet of exhibition space will begin. LVCVA says doing the renovation in a separate phase will allow booked conventions to carry on without any displacement from construction activities because the Phase Two facility will serve as a 'swing space' to accommodate shows while Phase 3 facilities are being renovated.

Phase Three will upgrade the 3,775,000 square feet of space in the North, Central, and upper/lower South Halls.

LVCVA says the convention center project is expected to draw an additional 600,000 people each year, in part because the authority will be able to book more events simultaneously and create new opportunities for shows held at more than one site.

Rossi Ralenkotter, president of LVCVA, said, "We’ve identified some new shows that could come into center but we currently can’t handle them because we already have conventions booked here or we need more space.”

Upon completion of the entire Las Vegas convention district buildout, the center will have 5,215,000 square feet of space. End date is anticipated to be in 2023.

Las Vegas currently hosts 21,864 conventions/meetings/expos each year.
