$1 Billion Project “On Time And On Schedule"

The massive Tampa International Airport expansion - actually five different projects in the airport's Master Plan - is on schedule and meeting its major milestones, says spokesman Danny Valentine.

More than 4,000 construction workers are participating in the $953 million expansion, which includes $194 million in state tax revenue. It is one of the largest public works projects in Tampa Bay area history and is technically five different projects: expansion of the main terminal; construction of a consolidated rental car center south of the terminal; a 1.4 mile automated people mover linking the terminal, rental car center and possibly a future transit hub; a new taxiway bridge taking aircraft over TIA roadways; and a concessions receiving and distribution center, which is finished and about to open.

As of December, there were eight cranes on the site of the 2.6 million square foot rental car center, including three tower cranes. Construction on the full Phase I project will continue until late 2017.
