$1 Billion Electric Power Plant Planned for Northern Illinois

February 1, 2016

Competitive Power Ventures announced Thursday its intention to open a state-of-the-art electric generating facility in the Three Rivers area of unincorporated Grundy County.

The Three Rivers Energy Center construction start date is 2018 and CPV hopes the plant will be online in 2021. The 1,100-megawatt natural gas-powered facility will generate power for about 1.1 million homes. Project director Michael Bruno says the build will make use of the area's substantial union labor workforce. When completed, Three Rivers will employ 25 full time employees.

Competitive Power Ventures is in the process of requesting approvals from federal and state agencies.

The Three Rivers Energy Center site is 2,500 feet from Excelon's Dresden Generating Station but Bruno doesn't see the new facility impacting the operation of Dresden's nuclear reactors.
