Top 100: Electronically Controlled Engine, Transmission

Sept. 28, 2010

Replacing the D350E II, Caterpillar's 735 articulated truck features an electronic Cat 3406 engine producing 365 horsepower, mated to an eight-forward-speed electronically controlled transmission. The truck also has a new front suspension system, cooling system mounted to the rear of the cab and integrated with new styling, new operator station and center-mounted cab, and a 36-short-ton payload. The 735's new front suspension allows the axle to oscillate 6 degrees to provide a smoother ride and faster travel speeds, Cat says. It boasts extended engine-oil-change and hydraulic-oil-change intervals, extended life coolant, and no wheel-bearing adjustments required. Top travel speed is 34.7 mph. Estimated list price: $510,880.
