The ORBCOMM system provides global, two-way data communication by using "subscriber communicators" (SCs) that pass information to and from Gateway Control Centers via the company's satellite network. The Internet commonly is used for final transmission of data, but more secure methods are available. For mobile assets, such as construction equipment, the system's capabilities include monitoring vehicle location, assessing operating conditions (temperature alarms, for instance), tracking engine diagnostics, monitoring engine hours and fuel levels, plus reporting "geo-fencing" alarms that may indicate possible theft.
