According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Highway Trust Fund Ticker, the Highway Account of the Highway Trust Fund will likely encounter a shortfall by the end of August 2014.

The account began with $1.6 billion in cash at the beginning of fiscal year 2014. After the start of the fiscal year, a $9.7 billion transfer from the General Fund to the Highway Account was made.

“The surface transportation program continues to outlay at a greater pace than receipts are coming in,” the DOT statement says. “As a result, the cash balance has dropped by nearly $3.5 billion since the General Fund transfer occurred.”

As of March 28, 2014, the account’s balance was $8.4 billion.
