Bertha, the boring machine digging Seattle’s Highway 99 tunnel, remains stuck after hitting an unknown object on Dec. 6.
According to the Seattle Times, workers have begun drilling vertical wells to drain the groundwater and relieve pressure around the machine. Twelve wells will aid in the dewatering, which is set to be complete late this week. When the drilling and pumping are complete, officials hope engineers will be able to inspect and remove the blockage.
