Alaska DOT Tests Icebreaker Plow

The Alaska Department of Transportation took a Raiko icebreaker to the icy roads of Fairbanks on Nov. 18, before sending it to Anchorage early this week.

The Alaska Department of Transportation took a Raiko icebreaker to the icy roads of Fairbanks on Nov. 18, before sending it to Anchorage early this week. According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, the 3,800-pound machine, made by Finnish company Sah-Ko Oy, crushes ice with a roller covered in metal spikes.

The icebreaker attaches to the front of a plow truck and performs best on thick ice, the report says.
